From Dr. Gambino:

"The New Jersey Department of Education’s Office of School Preparedness and Emergency Planning is hosting an evening virtual information session entitled; The Role of The School Nurse in School Safety and Security.

This session will include similar content to the presentation Dr. Thomas Gambino shared in person at some of the County Nurse Association meetings throughout the state. This session will be held virtually on Wednesday, April 23, 2025 from 5:30pm to 6:45pm.

As we are aware, the school nurse plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety and security of all students by addressing both physical and emotional health needs. They are often the first line of defense in managing illnesses, injuries, and medical emergencies that may arise during the school day, and their roles are amplified during an actual school crisis. The expertise of school nurses can contribute greatly to effective emergency responses when proactively consulted during the development of response plans, through inclusion in planning and executing security drills, and when their services are needed during a true school emergency.   By incorporating the school nurse in the planning and drilling processes, school officials and school nurses are much better equipped to manage both the emotional and medical needs of students and staff during school emergencies.
