The New Jersey Department of Health (NJDOH) reminds schools and childcare centers that hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) often increases during this time of year. HFMD is common and usually mild. Frequent handwashing and cleaning can help prevent its spread.

The NJDOH has received reports of HFMD outbreaks from childcare/early care and education programs, and K-12 schools including sports teams, since the start of the school year. Although this illness can occur year-round, outbreaks are most common in the summer and early fall.

It is important for childcare/early care and education programs (ECEs), and K-12 schools to be alert for cases and take precautions outlined in the attached document to prevent further illness. Please see the attached document for additional information and resources.
