Where to find free eyeglasses

Posted 6 days ago

Greetings,

We received an inquiry about finding free eyeglasses and posted the question on School Nurse Net. Please see the summary of the responses which we received:

  • "The NJ Commission for the Blind and Visually Impaired provides free exams and glasses.  You can find the locations and schedules here: https://www.nj.gov/humanservices/cbvi/services/prevention/  Click on "Free Eye Screening Locations/Schedules" There is a list of locations by county.
  • The VSP providers are still available. Call a few in your area and explain about the NASN -VSP pause. They might still see children free of cost. https://www.vsp.com/eye-doctor
  • The Midland Park Lions Club has spot screened my students for the past 4 years free of charge. This year they shared info about AINAK, a US based nonprofit organization that provides eye exams and glasses to underserved students and communities across the US. I have not had to use them but here is the website: https://myainak.org.
  • One of the respondents indicated that their local America's Best will see a student on a case by case basis. She thinks they have to be at least 6 years old, however."

It's great to join NASN/ NJSSA because you can search the NASN website for all sorts of topics and ask your questions on the discussion lists for the State and National organizations. It can be set up so that the discussions lists come directly to your email account, which provides interesting information and insights every day.
